Zvi Garfunkel

 

Zvi Garfunkel was born in Kaunas in the Vilniaus Gatve 3 in Kaunas. His father Leib Garfunkel (Levas Garfunkelis ) was one of the leaders of the Jewish community in Lithuania and later one of the members of the ghetto leadership. In January 1944 Zvi was smuggled out of the ghetto. He was hidden by the Jankauskas family and as the suspicion of the neibours arose, he was smuggled again to the countryside. He was collected after the liberation by those

who knew where he was and found his way back to his family. He studied Geology and became a leading professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Professor Garfunkel got many important prizes and dedicated his research to the transform of the dead sea crater
